Gardaí close road after deadly collision outside Waterford

A man and woman travelling who were travelling in a car which collided with a van outside of Waterford city have died.

They are understood to be in their 50s.

Two occupants of the van were also injured but not seriously. They were both taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment. It is understood one of those was a child.

A forensic collision investigation will take place at the scene which remained closed off to traffic on Saturday evening.

Post mortem examinations will be carried out on the remains of the two people who died, at the morgue at UHW.

Tramore and Waterford City West Sinn Féin councillor Jim Griffin said he was on his way home from Splashworld with his grandchildren when he met emergency services responding to the collision.

He said: “My thoughts are with the families involved.” 

A garda statement said: “An Garda Síochána can confirm that we are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on the Tramore Road at Pickardstown, Co. Waterford today, Saturday 21st February 2026."
