A woman was taken to hospital with severe injuries after an assault in Co Limerick in the early hours of Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 5.20am in the Lord Edward Street area of Kilmallock.

It is believed the woman, aged in her 30s, was attacked by a man armed with a hurley.

She was taken to University Hospital Limerick after suffering serious injuries.

A garda spokesperson said the woman was treated for "non-life threatening injuries."

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact Bruff Garda Station on 061 382 940.

Investigations are continuing, they said.
