A Status Yellow warning for rain has been issued for three counties, with Met Éireann saying that heavy downpours may lead to flooding.

The warning for Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow, will come into effect at midnight on Tuesday and remain in place until 6pm.

The downpours could lead to localised flooding and difficult travel conditions.

National weather outlook

Sunday started with mist and fog in places alongside some scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, heavy and most frequent in the north and northwest.

It will then become drier later in the afternoon with some bright spells and scattered patches of light rain and drizzle.

Similar rainy conditions will continue overnight, with dry and clear conditions expected over parts of the southwest while frost and icy patches form early in the night. Cloud will then thicken towards the morning, leading to heavy rain, feeding in from the southwest.

Monday will be a dull and wet day with widespread rain which will persist for the afternoon and turn heavy at times before it starts gradually clearing eastwards. It will also be breezy with strong winds and gusts along the Atlantic coasts.

Monday night will see more rain over the east and northwest counties at first. However, while clear and dry conditions are expected elsewhere as the rain clears, frost and ice will start to form with lows of -2C to 1C expected.

Tuesday will be cold and crisp with frost, ice patches and some early sun in the west. Elsewhere will see wet and windy weather through the morning and afternoon.

The rain will turn heavy at times and possibly wintry, with any snowfall most likely on higher ground. While daytime temperatures of 2C to 7C are expected, it will feel "extra chilly" due to brisk or cyclonic winds.

Rain will continue into Tuesday night, with snow mainly confined to higher ground and low temperatures of -1C to 3C.

Wednesday will see more rain and drizzle with patches of mist and fog. However, as the rain clears through the day, there is a possibility for drier spells over southern counties.

Looking further into next week, Thursday will start mostly dry with rain and drizzle over parts. However, the rain will start to turn heavy over parts of the south and the east.
