Army bomb squad called to North Cork home after devices discovered

The Defence Forces' bomb squad wascalled to a house in Co Cork on Tuesday after suspected explosives were found during construction work.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to a call for assistance from gardaĆ­ after the devices were discovered at a home in the Newmarket area.

It is understood that the "historical ordnance" devices were found during construction work at the site.

After arriving at the scene at 10.20am, the EOD examined the devices, deemed them non-viable, and safely removed them from the area.Ā  Their work at the scene concluded shortly after 3pm.

Assistant Defence Forces press officer Captain Tony Smith said the EOD team had "responded to a request for assistance from An Garda SƭochƔna in relation to suspected historic ordnance found in the Newmarket area".

"Following an assessment by the EOD team it was assessed that the devices were historical ordnance, which were removed from the site and the scene was handed over to AGS [An Garda SƭochƔna]," he said.
