Met Éireann has issued a status yellow rain warning for Cork, with the forecaster saying there will be heavy rain and flooding.

It will come into effect at 11am on Wednesday and remain in place until 11pm.

Met Éireann said there would be "further spells of heavy rainfall on saturated ground", which could lead "to excess surface water and spot flooding".

For the rest of the country, Wednesday will see cloud build as rain starts to move in over the south and move northwards throughout the day. However, the northern half of the country will stay largely dry throughout daylight hours, while temperatures will reach highs of 9C to 13C.

Wednesday night will remain "cloudy and wet as that band of showery rain continues to clear northwards over the country", says the forecaster. "It will become drier further south later on in the night, with just isolated showers."

The country will see another cloudy start on Thursday, "with outbreaks of rain and drizzle over northern areas". Further south, conditions will stay mostly dry, with just scattered showers developing early on, some turning heavy at times.

"Brighter spells will develop further north towards the late afternoon," Met Éireann said, with temperatures ranging from 7C to 14C.

Friday will see a "wet and windy start with widespread rain" which will be heavy at times, "particularly over the southern half of the country". Temperatures are set to reach highs of 7C to 12C.

The cloudy and wet conditions will continue into Friday night, "with heavy falls at times over parts of Leinster".

Looking towards the weekend, Saturday will be a "breezy and cloudy day with scattered outbreaks of rain to start". The rain will ease later in the day, with some "occasional sunny spell breaking through".

Sunday looks set to follow suit, with a largely dry day in store "with variable cloud and sunny spells".

Met Éireann said scattered showers may develop across the north and northwest at times, with temperatures reaching highs of 7C to 9C.
