Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the discovery of a body in water by a popular walkway in Co Kerry.

The body of a woman was discovered in the water shortly before 1pm on Wednesday by the canal walkway between Tralee and Blennerville at Lohercannon.

A Garda spokesperson said: "The Coroner has been notified and the body was removed from the scene and taken to University Hospital Kerry pending formal identification."

Gardaí confirmed a formal identification has taken place at University Hospital Kerry.

They are appealing to anyone who may have information regarding this incident or the identity of the female to come forward.

The woman is believed to have been in her 50s or 60s, approximately 5'5" inches tall and was wearing a red top, black leggings and white runners.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066 710 2300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Enquiries are ongoing, the spokesperson said.
