Raincoats and umbrellas at the ready, Met Éireann has issued a new Status Yellow rain warning for the Southwest, in effect from 8pm today until 3am Wednesday.

Heavy spells of blustery rain are expected to hit Cork and Kerry overnight, with other parts of Munster, including Limerick and Clare, also affected and potentially facing the worst conditions.

The forecaster listed possible impacts as difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility, and localised flooding.

Widespread outbreaks of rain are expected, heavy in places with spot flooding likely.

The rain will clear eastwards by morning, with patches of fog developing. Temperatures could drop as low as 1C, with fresh and gusty southeasterly winds veering southwest, strong near the coasts.

Wednesday will be largely dry but cloudy in the morning, with isolated showers and limited sunny spells.

Better sunny spells will develop during the afternoon, but cloud and showers may push into southern areas in the evening.

Highest temperatures will reach 16C to 19C, with fresh and gusty southwesterly winds easing later in the day.

On Wednesday night, showery outbreaks of rain will push up from the south, mainly affecting Munster and Leinster, with some heavy falls possible.

Lowest temperatures will range from 8C to 13C, with mostly light to moderate southwesterly winds, fresh at first in the north and west, strengthening near southern coasts by morning.

Conditions are expected to remain unsettled throughout the week, but Met Éireann forecasts occasional spells of sunshine.
