Woman, 20s, dies after Cork City Marathon

A woman in her 20s has died after taking part in the half marathon section of the Cork City Marathon.
The woman became unwell at the finishing line on Patrick's Street at around 1pm.
She was tended to at the scene by medics before being rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.
The woman, who is from Cork, was pronounced dead some time later.
Her family has now been notified of her death.
In a statement, the Cork City Marathon organisers said: “Cork City Council is deeply saddened to confirm that a participant in the Cork City Marathon has tragically passed away.
"The person was attended to immediately by the emergency services on the scene. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.”
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said on Sunday that it was a devastating and tragic turn of events.
“I am deeply saddened at the tragic death of a young woman taking part in today’s Cork City Marathon," said Mr Martin.
"The marathon is an event which sees people from all walks of life come together.
Mr Martin said his thoughts are with the woman's family and friends during what is a most difficult time.
He added that he is also thinking of the other participants in the marathon and the emergency services who were at the scene.
