Two people have been arrested in Cork City after an elderly woman was robbed in her home by a couple posing as animal inspectors.

Gardaí launched an investigation after a man and woman called to the home of the elderly woman, who lives alone on the city’s northside and made off with a substantial quantity of cash.

They identified themselves at the door as animal inspectors and were allowed into the house, where it’s understood the woman distracted the homeowner in conversation downstairs while her male accomplice moved around the home and went upstairs before they left.

The homeowner became suspicious during her interactions with them and discovered shortly afterwards that she had been robbed.

Gardaí later spotted two people — a man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s — in the Wilton area matching the description of the two suspects involved in the robbery on the northside and arrested them.

They are still being questioned today about that incident and another robbery at a business premises on Washington Street.
