A young man is fighting for his life after falling from a fourth-floor balcony in a student accommodation complex in Cork City.
The 20-year-old, who it is believed is a student at Munster Technological University (MTU), suffered multiple severe injuries after he fell from the balcony of his room on the top floor of one of the accommodation blocks at the Eden Hall complex on Model Farm Road in Bishopstown.
The complex is one of the most popular student villages in the western suburbs, located on the same site as a restaurant, cafe, and a climbing wall centre and close to MTU’s main campus in Bishopstown and to the Leisureworld gym and pool.
Emergency services were alerted at around 4.30am on Thursday after security staff found the young man lying in a courtyard area of the complex with critical injuries.
Several units of the Cork City Fire Brigade, HSE paramedics and gardaĂ rushed to the scene.
The young man had suffered multiple severe injuries consistent with a fall from a height and the medics rendered immediate medical aid at the scene before preparing the casualty for transfer by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH).
He was removed from Eden Hall in critical condition.
The scene was sealed off for a garda investigation. It is understood that following a preliminary examination of the scene and initial enquiries, the early indications suggest that this was a tragic accident.
