Cork schools save more than 141,000 batteries from landfills with proceeds going to charity

Since the campaign began, more than €590,575 has been raised to support the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice

Schools across Cork made a significant environmental impact by preventing thousands of used batteries from entering landfills during the last academic year. 

Sixty schools participated in WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition, collecting the equivalent of 141,350 used AA batteries for recycling. Nationwide, students from primary and secondary schools helped collect 1.5 million used AA batteries — the combined weight of nearly four school buses.
