Man remains critically ill after machete attack in Cobh
A man is critically ill in hospital after being attacked with a machete in Cobh last night.
The victim, who is in his 30s and from the harbour town, was attacked by a man who is believed to have jumped out of a car, which pulled into the car park of the Eurospar shop on Newtown Road last night at around 8pm.
The man then fled from the scene in the car, leaving his victim collapsed on the ground.
There were a number of people in the area at the time who went to the man’s assistance and contacted the emergency services.
The man sustained a serious leg injury in the attack and was rushed to Cork University Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition, after undergoing surgery.
Gardaí are now trying to establish the motive for the assault but sources believe it was not a random attack.
Nobody has been arrested in connection with the incident and the weapon has not been recovered.
A technical examination of the scene has been carried out and CCTV footage of the area is being analysed.
Gardaí are asking anyone with information to help the investigation to contact them at Cobh Garda Station on 021 4908530 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
