Irish sprint legend and former world champion Derval O’Rourke has hailed the Cork Primary School Sports as her "gateway into athletics" as the city marked the centenary of the remarkable sporting event on Wednesday.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Kieran McCarthy, hosted a civic reception in City Hall to salute the generations of volunteers who have helped build the event from humble beginnings in 1924 into Europe’s largest one-day children’s athletics meet.
