A teenage girl has been killed in a two-car collision in Co Tipperary.

The incident occurred at around 6.45pm on Thursday on the R503 at Rearcross.

The 15-year-old was a passenger in one of the cars and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the collision.

She is the 25th person to be killed on Irish roads so far this year.

There were three other occupants in that car - a man in his 20s, a woman in her 20s, and another teenage girl.

The three people and the driver of the second car, an adult woman, were transported to University Hospital Limerick for assessment.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The body of the teenage girl has been transferred to the mortuary at UHL where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The road at Rearcross remains closed to facilitate an examination by the Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local traffic diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. Anyone who may have camera footage, including dash cam, is asked to make this available to Gardaí.
