Operation underway after car enters River Lee in Cork

Gardai and emergency services remain at an incident at Kennedy Quay after a vehicle entered the water earlier this morning.

Naval service divers have arrived to help recover a body from a car which entered the River Lee in Cork city centre on Thursday.

The alarm was raised just after 7am when witnesses reported seeing a car enter the water at Kennedy Quay, opposite the Southern Milling premises.

It is understood there was just one person in the car at the time. Emergency services are on the scene

The Port of Cork controlled area is a working quayside, and while the quays are unprotected to facilitate the loading and unloading of ships, there are small safety kerbs at certain strategic locations to prevent the accidental rolling of cars into the water.

Three units of Cork City Fire Brigade and Crosshaven Coast Guard responded to the incident but the car became submerged quickly.

It has been located and divers are on site working to recover a body.

A garda investigation into the incident is underway.
