A woman has been killed after her car collided with a truck this afternoon in Co Kerry.

The incident occurred on the N22 Road in Glenflesk village this afternoon.

The driver of the car, a woman aged in her early 50s, was pronounced dead and her body remains at the scene.

The woman is understood to be a local woman and a mother.

The incident marks the fourth fatality on Irish roads during the first four days of the year.

No further injuries have been reported following the collision.

The road where the collision between the car and the articulated truck took place is one of the major arteries through Kerry, on the Killarney side of Glenflesk.

There was one person in each vehicle at the time of the collision, it is understood.

The road was to remain closed overnight with further technical examinations due on Friday morning.

Independent local councilor Martin Grady said Thursday’s crash was a tragic event.

“This is the first road death in Kerry this year. There were nine deaths on Kerry roads last year. One death is too many," said Mr Grady.

“My condolences go to the woman’s family at this time. It’s tragic.”

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and those who may have footage, including dash cam, of the N22 in the Glenflesk area between 3pm and 4.15pm should make this available to gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Killarney Garda station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
