Two arrested after car fails to stop at Cork checkpoint

Gardaí pursued the vehicle after it failed to stop when signalled to do so. 

Gardaí have arrested two males after a car failed to stop at a checkpoint on the northside of the city.

It is understood the incident is not related to a feud which has been ongoing in the city in recent days.

On Wednesday evening, gardaí spotted a suspicious vehicle which they believe was taken from outside a house in Cork city around three weeks ago.

Gardaí signalled for the vehicle to stop, but it failed to do so.

Gardaí pursued the vehicle and it was brought to a stop near the grotto in Blackpool after 8pm on Wednesday evening.

Two males, aged in their late teens and early 20s, were arrested. A stolen vehicle was recovered.

Minor damage was caused to a Garda patrol car during the course of the incident. 

No injuries have been reported, and enquires are ongoing.

It is understood the area was sealed off for a containment operation. 

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "The scene has been preserved to facilitate a technical examination. This examination will determine the course of the investigation.

Enquiries are ongoing."

Local councillor Kenneth O’Flynn said he understood  that a large number of gardaí were at the scene.

“I have confirmed that a car was rammed by the guards, and that’s by the Grotto in Blackpool, at the bottom of Dublin Hill.”
