Man arrested after rifle and ammunition seized in Clare

A man has been arrested after a firearm and ammunition were seized by gardaí in Shannon, Co Clare on Friday.

The discovery was made when gardaí attached to the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit with assistance from the Emergency Response Unit and Southern Region Dog Unit carried out a search in a wooded area in Shannon.

During the probe, a Colt M16 rifle, magazine and more than 170 rounds of ammunition were found.

A man was arrested and is currently being held at a garda station in Co Clare under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

Meanwhile, the firearm and ammunition are undergoing analysis by the Ballistics Section of the Garda National Technical Bureau.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
