Houses evacuated in Cork City following reports of suspicious device

A number of houses were evacuated in Cork City last night following reports of a suspicious device.
The incident occurred shortly after 8pm at a residential area off the Old Youghal Road in Mayfield, on the north side of the city.
Gardaí said they were called to a residential area following the reports of a suspicious device.
Gardaí said that a cordon was put in place and the Defence Forces explosive ordnance disposal unit was notified.
The houses were evacuated as a precaution.
After examination, the device was deemed not viable and the cordon was lifted.
Items of potential evidential interest have been handed over to gardaí and investigations are ongoing.
It is understood that detectives are trying to establish if there is a connection between last night’s incident and recent violent assaults on the northside of the city.
