A manhunt is underway after a violent domestic row ended in a fatal stabbing on a Dublin residential street in the early hours of this morning.

The deceased, from Limerick but living in Dublin, has been identified and gardaí are in contact with his family.

The 38-year-old victim was found on Blackhorse Place, in Dublin's north inner city, by emergency services at around 3.30am.

He was brought to nearby Mater Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Gardaí believe a domestic row spilled out from inside an apartment onto the street, where a third party stabbed the deceased.

Detectives are piecing together the events leading up to the attack and the background of the persons concerned.

It is believed the Limerick man was in an “on/off” relationship with a woman who was living at a new apartment complex off Blackhorse Avenue.

The boyfriend was living at a different address in Dublin.

It is thought the woman might have been out with two other men socialising before returning to her apartment on her own.

It is believed her boyfriend arrived and that, subsequently, the two other men called to the apartment.

Gardaí believe a row developed between the couple, possibly over the other men.

The argument carried on outside the apartment and onto the street, where gardaí suspect the deceased struck the woman a number of times.

One of the other men exited the apartment and, at some stage, stabbed the deceased. Both he and the second man fled the scene.

The girlfriend was there when gardaí and emergency services arrived. Attempts were made to resuscitate the deceased before bringing him to the Mater Hospital.

He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Gardaí are harvesting local CCTV footage and home cameras in a bid to identify and track the two men.

A Garda statement said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal assault which occurred at Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin 7, in the early hours of Sunday.

“A male was discovered with serious injuries on the footpath at Blackhorse Place and conveyed from the scene to Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.” It said the scene had been preserved for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

“The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course,” the statement said.

“This investigation is being coordinated from an incident room at the Bridewell Garda Station under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer.” It said gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly those who were in the Blackhorse Avenue/Blackhorse Place area or who may have video footage (including dash-cam) between 2am and 3am.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bridewell Garda Station on 01 666 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
