Man charged with Waterford church stabbing declines psychiatric evaluation

The 36-year-old man charged in connection with the alleged stabbing of a woman at the Holy Cross church in Tramore, Co Waterford, appeared again in court on Tuesday.

The incident occurred last Tuesday morning shortly before 10am mass, when the woman was stabbed whilst saying the rosary at the Holy Cross Church in Summerhill.

Following the incident, gardaí arrested and charged Niall Cummins, of the Willows, Clarinwood, Tramore.

He made his first appearance in Waterford District Court last Wednesday, where a psychiatric evaluation was ordered for Mr Cummins.

During his updated appearance via video link this morning, the court heard that Mr Cummins has declined an appointment with a psychiatrist, and therefore the procurement of a psychiatric report has not commenced.

The court was also informed that the State has objected to bail.

Judge Kevin Staunton ordered that Mr Cummins be remanded in custody until August 11 for DPP directions.

Members of the man’s family attended Waterford Courthouse during this morning’s brief hearing.
