A 42-year-old Cork man accused of murdering a young Ukrainian father of one in Cork City last March is anxious the case progress as quickly as possible, his solicitor indicated on Wednesday.

Jonathan Hennessy appeared at Cork District Court by video link from prison in the case where the deceased lost his life following a violent incident near his home on March 16, 2026.

Sergeant John Dineen said there were no DPP directions in the case yet.

Judge Darach McCarthy remanded the accused in custody until June 17.

Eddie Burke, defending, said there was no consent from the defence to any adjournment longer than two weeks as he had consulted with Mr Hennessy, who indicated he was anxious for the case to progress.

Mr Hennessy, of 15 Dr Patrick O’Sullivan Terrace, Upper Aghada, Co Cork, was charged by Detective Garda Kevin Motherway with a single count which stated: “On March 16, 2023, at Knapp’s Square, Cork City in the district court area of Cork City in District area 19, he did murder one Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi, contrary to common law.”

Sgt Dineen previously said it is alleged that the deceased sustained a stab wound to the chest during an altercation at Knapp’s Square at around 7.50pm on Monday, March 16. He returned home but later died, with death formally pronounced at 8.35pm.

It was reported that the father of one, who was in his early 30s, was fatally stabbed just metres from his home at Camden Court apartments on Carroll’s Quay after going out to buy food nearby.

He managed to return to his apartment, where his partner raised the alarm, but despite efforts by paramedics to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation was launched immediately following the fatal stabbing.
