American tourists visiting Blarney Castle had their rental car stolen from the car park and the barrier was rammed as it was driven away, it was claimed at Cork District Court.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis outlined the background to the alleged offence at Cork District Court.

“A rental vehicle was taken from Blarney Castle car park on Wednesday, April 15.

“American tourists rented a vehicle and believed that the key of the vehicle was dropped while on the grounds of the castle. Multiple suitcases and backpacks, along with passports for both American tourists, were also taken that were in the boot.

“The vehicle rammed the barrier at the entrance of the car park, damaging same after the vehicle was taken.

“The vehicle was observed by gardaí and subsequently stopped on Knockpogue Avenue, Cork, later in the evening on April 15.

“Calum Lyons was arrested after fleeing the scene on foot. Property was returned to the owners,” Sgt Davis said.

Shane Collins-Daly, solicitor, applied for bail for Calum Lyons, of 21 Cushing Place, Farranree, Cork, on the charge of driving a stolen car.

The sergeant confirmed to Judge Mary Dorgan the returned property included passports.

After hearing this, Judge Dorgan said: “That is the only reason he is getting bail.”

Conditions require him to keep a curfew between 11pm and 7am, be contactable by gardaí by mobile phone at all times, sign on once a day at Gurranabraher Garda Station and stay out of cars.

Judge Dorgan adjourned the case until June 17 and remarked: “Those poor people over here on holidays.” Turning directly to the defendant, the judge said: “It is only an allegation at this stage but you need to be very careful.”
