Cork man held 'nasty-looking' knife during confrontation with gardaí
The court heard the man repeatedly shouted in a threatening manner to gardaí.
A ‘nasty-looking’ knife was wielded by a man who approached a garda patrol vehicle telling gardaí to “get the fuck out of the car” and today the culprit was sentenced to a total of 13 months arising out of this and other violent incidents.
Judge Philip O’Leary imposed that total sentence at Cork District Court on Dean Oosterloo, of Mill Park, Old Mallow Rd, Cork.
Inspector Brendan McKenna said Garda Paraic White responded to a call to Mill Park, at around 10.30pm on October 8, 2025.
“Gardaí arrived at the scene and parked their patrol car in front of a house at Mill Park. Dean Oosterloo opened the door of the property and walked aggressively towards the patrol car.
“He was repeatedly shouting in a threatening manner at the patrol car, 'Get the fuck out of the car'.
"Gardaí were repeatedly instructing him to drop an item he was holding in his left hand.
“Dean Oosterloo returned to the front door of his home. When Dean Oosterloo turned gardaí saw that it was a knife he was holding — holding the knife backwards, with the blade end of the knife being tucked up inside his sleeve.
“He turned around before he reached the door, and walked in a fast and aggressive manner towards the patrol car. He was again shouting, 'get the fuck out of the car'. As he approached the car he was sprayed with OC spray.
“He retreated into the house still carrying the knife… He re-emerged, shouting aggressively and ran towards gardaí when OC spray was used on him again… He was arrested in possession of the knife,” Sgt Davis alleged.
The 36-year-old pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, being threatening and abusive and being so intoxicated that he was a danger to himself or others.
Dean Oosterloo also pleaded guilty to similar charges arising out of two incidents that occurred in 2024. On June 5 that year, he was abusive to staff at the emergency department of Mercy University Hospital. Insp McKenna said the defendant was screaming and roaring threats and called one garda a ‘pig c***’.
On September 25, 2024, the same man caused such a violent disturbance at Mill Park and he had to be sprayed with OC spray, restrained and handcuffed, Insp. McKenna said.
Diarmuid Kelleher solicitor said the defendant was in custody since October 9, 2025.
“I consulted with him today and he was at pains to tell me he wanted to apologise to the guards. He has been in custody for some time and seems to have used the time to reflect.
“He got into taking drugs at a young age and this escalated to taking heroin. He celebrated — which is not really the right word — his 36th birthday in custody in January. He was mixing alcohol with medication at the time of these offences. He was very seriously injured in an accident in September 2023. He had to have his ear re-attached. He had a lot of broken bones and experienced memory and speech loss.
“Very heavy medication was driving him out of his mind. His relationship fell down — through his behaviour. He was then drinking to get over the pain of that. His relationship with his family is good again now that he has gotten sober. He has made his peace with his family,” Mr Kelleher said.
Judge O’Leary said: “It is a sad story, as there often is. But unfortunately there is a lot of criminality here. (Injuries from the accident) did not stop his criminal activity. And the knife was a nasty-looking implement... I hope you can get some treatment.”
