Cork man accused of shoplifting tells judge to stop 'Mickey-Mousing me around'

Judge Catherine Ryan remanded the defendant in custody until January 28.

A man accused of four counts of shoplifting applied for bail and as soon as he was refused, he said to the judge: “Alright so, would you sentence me today instead of Mickey-Mousing me around again on remand and remand and remand.”

Roy Twohig, aged 45, of Kinlay House, Shandon, Cork, continued in his address to Judge Catherine Ryan from the dock at Cork District Court: “Just deal with it please and let me get it over with today.”

He was charged with four thefts, the most recent of which allegedly occurred on Saturday, January 24, at Brown Thomas, St Patrick’s St, Cork.

He was charged with stealing a €350 jacket by walking out of the store, allegedly wearing the jacket for which no payment had been made.

He was also charged with stealing runners valued at €50 at Elvery’s Sports on Oliver Plunkett St, Cork, on January 2.

On December 4, 2025, at Dealz on Grand Parade, he allegedly stole €125 worth of items.

Finally, on November 18, 2025, he was charged with stealing a €40 jacket at Mountain Warehouse on Opera Lane.

Eddie Burke solicitor said the items allegedly stolen were clothing and not alcohol. He also said that most of it was recovered.

Following the garda objection to bail, Judge Catherine Ryan was about to remand him in custody.

However, the defendant said he would plead guilty to everything instead. Sergeant Aisling Murphy said that while the DPP accepted jurisdiction for the cases to be heard at district court level, there were no directions in respect of the alleged incident at Brown Thomas.

Mr Burke said that most of the property referred to in the charges had been recovered.

Judge Ryan remanded the defendant in custody until January 28.

During his unsuccessful application for bail, Roy Twohig complained: “I am being given no break by the gardaí whatsoever.”
