A young man visiting Cork was returning to his accommodation after socialising in the city when he was attacked and beaten on the ground by a group of youths, and now one of them faces sentencing for his part in the assault.

After hearing an outline of the facts of the unprovoked assault, Judge John King said of defendant, 20-year-old Dean McCarthy, of 22 Fernway, Classis Lake, Ballincollig, Cork: “Without a shadow of a doubt he is in custodial sentence territory. I am going to put the matter back for a probation report.”
