A 34-year-old man who stole €400 in coins from the storeroom of a city centre pub at 5am returned to try to burgle it again two and a half hours later to see if he could steal alcohol.
Alan O’Dwyer, barrister, said John O’Mahony, of 120 Ardcullen, Hollyhill, Cork, was under the influence of “quite a number of substances” when burgling the pub in Cork City and making a second attempt to burgle it on the same day.
The 34-year-old admitted entering The Welcome Inn on Parnell Place as a trespasser on March 16, 2024, and a second count of attempted burglary at the same premises at another time on the same date.
Prosecution barrister Katherine McGillicuddy called evidence that the accused stole a bucket containing €400 in coin at 5am on March 16, 2024. He returned at 7.30am to steal alcohol.
Mr O’Dwyer accepted the accused man had quite a number of previous convictions.
The barrister said the defendant was continuing under the direction of the probation service and Cork Alliance. Judge Dermot Sheehan said he should keep doing so and he should also gather €400 compensation for the publican.
Judge Sheehan put sentencing back until February 24, 2026, and said if the accused continued with the progress he was making then the judge dealing with the case next year could consider a non-custodial sentence at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
