Cork gardaí seized 2kg of cannabis after stopping speeding car
Accused pleaded guilty to allowing his vehicle to be used for the possession of cannabis.
Gardaí in Gurranabraher seized 2kg of cannabis herb after stopping a Volvo S40 driven at speed through Popham’s Road in Cork on a date in January 2023, and now the driver has been sentenced for his part in the escapade.
Detective Garda Linda O’Keeffe gave evidence at Cork Circuit Criminal Court in the case against 28-year-old Michael O’Sullivan, of 3 Ballycurreen, Airport Road, Cork.
He pleaded guilty to an unusual charge under the Misuse of Drugs Act — namely that of allowing his vehicle to be used for the possession of cannabis.
Another man who was present in the car who ran away from the scene was caught with the drugs and prosecuted for possession of cannabis herb and having it for sale or supply at 52 Steps, Innishannon Road, Fairhill, Cork, on January 4, 2023.
Det Garda O’Keeffe said the incident occurred at 11.20pm on that date, when gardaí indicated for the Volvo to stop after it was driven at speed up Popham’s Road and on to Knockfree Avenue.
The front-seat passenger fled but was apprehended nearby with the €40,000 worth of cannabis.
“Interviewed on three occasions, Michael O’Sullivan admitted driving to a location in Mayfield for another person to pick up two kilos of vacuum-packed cannabis,” Det Garda O’Keeffe said.
Judge Helen Boyle said she would impose a total suspended sentence of two years and three months on Michael O’Sullivan for his part in this drugs enterprise, which occurred almost three years ago.
