Cork men accused of targeted burglary of woman living alone in Mallow

One of the men is alleged to have used the victim's name during the offence

Cork gardaí told the court that the men posed a risk to members of the public.

Gardaí objected to bail being granted to two men involved in “a premeditated and targeted burglary at the home of a single woman” in Mallow, claiming that they posed a risk to members of the public.

The alleged burglary was carried out at a particular apartment on an upper floor or an apartment complex at West End, Mallow, Co Cork, on Friday, September 26.

Detective Garda Anthony Daly testified at Cork District Court in the course of the objection to bail being granted to Darren Rice, aged 34, of Lotabeg Green, Mayfield, Cork, that the name of the woman living at the apartment was used by the defendant in the course of the incident.

The detective expressed concerns about public safety if the accused was released on bail. He said the accused had a drug difficulty and would commit further offences if given bail.

Garda Conor O’Halloran gave similar evidence in his objection to bail being granted to the co-accused, Denis Kelly, aged 38, of Ashgrove View, Ballyvolane, Cork.

Frank Buttimer solicitor represented both accused and suggested that it was a suitable case for bail in both instances.

Judge Mary Dorgan refused bail, referring to factors including prosecution allegations that that this was a targeted burglary at the home of a woman living alone.

Both Darren Rice and Denis Kelly were remanded in custody until Tuesday, October 7, at Mallow District Court.
