A man sustained serious injuries following an assault in Dublin city centre this morning.

Gardaí sealed off several areas after the incident, which occurred on Westmoreland Street in Dublin 2 at approximately 6.30am.

The man, in his 40s, was taken to St James's Hospital, where he remains in serious condition, according to a garda spokesperson.

"The scene was preserved for a technical examination which has been completed. Investigations are ongoing," added the spokesperson.

During the examination, gardaí cordoned off parts of O'Connell Street, O'Connell Bridge, and Westmoreland Street. 

All areas have now reopened.
