New jury sworn in for Cork trial of two boys accused of raping girl at Limerick racecourse

A new jury of nine women and three men willhea the case at the Central Criminal Court in Cork.

The jury in the trial of a thirteen-year-old boy and a fifteen-year-old boy accused of raping a 16-year-old girl at a Christmas race meeting were discharged following legal submissions and a new jury was sworn in at the Central Criminal Court today.

Mr Justice Paul McDermott thanked the seven women and five men who were sworn in as jurors on Monday and explained to them, “As a matter of law I have taken the decision — having heard legal submissions — to discharge you. Your jury service has ended. You may think this is a waste of time and that I have treated your time in a cavalier way, but I don’t. My duty is to apply the law in relation to the case. This process was followed and had to be gone through to raise this point. I cannot offer you any more than my thanks.”
