A man in his 60s who has been found guilty by a jury of raping a woman who was approximately half his age after “plying her with brandy” will be sentenced on February 27 at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.

The prosecution will outline the background circumstances of the May 28 2022 incident which gave rise to the prosecution and conviction of the man for rape.

A victim impact statement will also be presented to Ms Justice SiobhĂĄn Lankford at the sentencing hearing.

The judge explained that it is generally the practice at the Central Criminal Court to hear the evidence at a sentencing hearing and then to adjourn the imposition of sentence for a number of weeks.

The convicted man was remanded in custody pending sentencing matters as soon as the jury recorded the conviction against him.

The jury deliberated for nine hours and 32 minutes before reaching their 10-2 majority decision that the man was guilty of rape.

The defendant was the landlord of the property where the young woman was residing with her partner.
