An elderly patient at Mercy University Hospital had her mobile phone stolen from her bedside as she slept — a crime that caused her deep distress because it was her only link to family during the adverse weather conditions.

Jerry Foley, aged 49, of no fixed address was arrested by Garda Seán Finnegan and charged with carrying out the theft of the phone in the early hours of Thursday, January 9.
