A young man accused of putting his grandmother in fear following another crime where he allegedly burgled a learning support facility in Cork was remanded in custody until March 21.

Sergeant Pat Lyons said the charges were very recent and directions were awaited from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Defence solicitor Shane Collins-Daly explained this to the accused who appeared at Cork District Court by video link from prison.

Judge Mary Dorgan then remanded him in custody for a fortnight.

The defendant, who is in his 20s, cannot be named because the charge in relation to his grandmother involves an allegation of a breach of an order granted under the Domestic Violence Act.

Garda Richard Caverly objected to bail last week.

Mr Shane Collins-Daly said: “He would live with his grandmother ordinarily. There would be a cycle where his grandmother would forgive him and bring him back. He tells me he is doing very well… clean of all intoxicants but that there was a slip in recent days.”

The defendant’s grandmother was present at the court hearing and said: “I don’t want him to get bail. He is back on drugs. I cannot handle that anymore. He will come up to my home. I loves him with all my heart but I am not able anymore.”

The defendant said he had been tackling his addictions: “When I found out my grandmother was sick I got off everything. I am clean since August. I loves her with all my heart. I have been seeing an addiction counsellor to get off heroin. Over my grandmother being sick that is why I got off everything. There was just one day of relapse. It is the biggest regret of my life.”
