Three gardaí were injured by what is believed to have been a pellet gun when trying to execute court orders at a house in Longford on Tuesday.

A man is being questioned this evening about the incident at a house in Edgeworthstown.

Officers had managed to gain entry to the house when they went to execute the court orders.

However, a man in his 30s who was in the house discharged the weapon a number of times at the officers and then fled from the residence.

The Garda Air Support Unit was called to the scene to assist the officers search for the man.

A Garda statement said: “Following enquiries and follow-up searches, the male was subsequently located and arrested for alleged offences contrary to Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act 1997, with the assistance of the Armed Support Unit.

"He is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Longford area under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.”

The statement added: “Three Gardaí received a number of minor injuries, which were of small wounds that did not require immediate medical treatment. All members have been provided with welfare supports and will continue to be supported by colleagues and local management.”

Gardaí say that investigations are ongoing.
