A 38-year-old man has been remanded on bail in Cork after he appeared in court in relation to the seizure of more than €62,000 in cash, €3,500 worth of suspected cocaine, and a significant amount of ammunition.

Gerard Hayes of 65 College Lawn, College Manor, Cobh, Co Cork appeared at Mallow District Court on Tuesday morning.

Arrest on Monday

Garda James McCarthy told the court that he arrested Mr Hayes on Monday, February 12 at 5.50pm at Cobh Garda Station.

Sergeant Majella O’Sullivan said there were three charges in all and that gardaí were now waiting for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how to proceed. 

She added that Mr Hayes had already surrendered his passport.

Garda searches in Cobh

As part of ongoing investigations into the sale and distribution of controlled drugs and associated criminal activities in County Cork, gardaí from the Midleton District Drug Unit assisted by local garda units from Cobh, Midleton, and Fermoy conducted an operation in Cobh on Saturday afternoon, February 10.

During the operation, a substantial sum of cash and a high-powered car were seized at one residential property. 

At a second residence in the Cobh area, €3,500 worth of suspected cocaine, 180 rounds of ammunition, an ammunition press, incapacitant OC spray, and drug-related paraphernalia were also seized.

Judge Colm Roberts remanded Mr Hayes on his own bond of €2,000 to appear at Midleton District Court on July 11 for DPP directions. He was also ordered to sign on daily at Cobh Garda Station, observe a nighttime curfew, and be of good behaviour.
