Gardaí are investigating a shooting in Limerick city this evening, which left a man in a serious condition.

The gun attack took place in the Ballinacura Weston area of the city shortly before 5pm.

A male sustained serious injuries in the attack, which happened in the Hyde Road area.

Gardaí have arrested a man in connection with the incident.

Emergency services responded and the victim was taken to University Hospital Limerick.

Gardaí have sealed off the area, pending a ballistic and technical examination.

A Garda statement said: “Gardaí in Roxboro Road are investigating following a firearms incident in the Ballincurra Weston area of Limerick City this afternoon, Saturday.

“A man, aged in his 30s, was seriously injured during the course of this incident and has been taken to University Hospital Limerick.

“A man, aged in his 40s, has been arrested and detained under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda station in the Limerick City.” 

It said the crime scene was sealed off and that a technical examination was ongoing.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

“Any persons who were in the Hyde Avenue, Crecora Avenue and Ballinacurra Weston areas of Limerick City between the hours of 4pm and 4.45pm this afternoon and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to Investigating Gardaí," the statement said.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 21 4340, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

“Investigations are ongoing.”
