The defendant’s mother testified: 'He threatened to rape me. He suffers from mental health issues. He should be on anti-psychotic medication which he refuses to take.'

A young man who failed to take his anti-psychotic medication threatened to rape his mother at the family home and now he has been remanded in custody — as much for his own safety as that of his mother and others.

That was the view of Judge Joanne Carroll at an in camera hearing of Cork District Court to deal with cases under the Domestic Violence Act.
