Fire officer gives update following Dublin Mountains blaze

Crews at Dublin Fire Brigade returned to tackle a wildfire on the Dublin Mountains yesterday evening after the blaze reignited.

Firefighters from Rathfarnham and Dún Laoghaire attended the scene at Glencullen where smoke was said to be travelling from Three Rock Mountain into the suburbs of the city.

Speaking today, Darren O'Connor, district officer with Dublin Fire Brigade, said the situation has now been brought under control.

“The fire has died down considerably,” he told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.

“It’s being monitored at the moment by the local landowner.

“Crews withdrew there just after midnight last night and at one stage we had up to four pumped appliances, a water tanker, our wildfire jeep that’s based in Dún Laoghaire and a senior officer, but at the moment it has died down considerably.” 

The fire originally broke out a number of days ago and the cause is not currently known, he said.

Mr O’Connor said this summer has been one of the busiest periods Dublin Fire Brigade has experienced in recent years with the prolonged hot weather making working conditions “very arduous” for firefighters.

The fire at Dublin Mountains is the latest in a number of such incidents in Cork, Tipperary, Kerry and Wicklow in the last number of weeks.
