Met Éireann is warning of stormy conditions over the Easter bank holiday weekend with a nationwide weather advisory in place from Friday.

The forecaster said the weather will be "unsettled and mixed over Easter with a mobile Atlantic flow affecting Ireland".

It will be windy or possibly stormy in places on Saturday, and Met Éireann said it is likely that weather warnings will be issued.

There is potential for some "severe or damaging west to southwest gusts" and "coastal flooding is likely, especially around high tide times and in exposed, low-lying locations along the Atlantic coastal counties".

The advisory is in place from 2am on Friday until 1.30pm on Saturday.

More generally, it will be cold on Wednesday night with temperatures falling to lows of -1C. It will be a clear night in most parts, which will allow for some frost and ice to set in.

Thursday will see a "chilly and mostly cloudy start" with the best of any bright or sunny spells in the east and southeast.

"Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will gradually move into west and southwest counties, later pushing into rest of the country, accompanied by freshening southwest winds," Met Éireann said. "The rain will be heaviest across west Connacht with spot flooding here."

From Good Friday, when the weather advisory comes into place, there will be wet and windy weather, however, it will be mild with temperatures hitting highs of 14C.

Saturday will follow suit, but Easter Sunday should be better with Met Éireann saying "current indications show a cool and breezy day with sunny spells and showers".

Some of the showers will be heavy and it will be a milder day, with temperatures of 7C to 11C expected.
