Gardaí make fresh appeal for information on Icelandic man who went missing seven years ago

Icelander Jón Jónsson went missing in Dublin in February 2019.

Gardaí have made a fresh appeal for information as they try to trace missing Icelandic national Jón Jónsson on the seventh anniversary of his disappearance in Dublin.

Mr Jónsson, who was 41 and a father of four, arrived in the country to compete in the Dublin Poker Festival.

He left the Bonnington Hotel on the Swords Road shortly before 11am on Saturday February 9, 2019, and CCTV footage showed him walking passed the entrance to Highfield Hospital and towards the Collins Avenue junction.

He has not been seen or heard from since that morning.

An Garda Síochána said despite extensive searches, public appeals and its own investigative work over the last seven years, Mr Jónsson’s whereabouts are still unknown.

The case is still being treated as an active missing person investigation.

“On this seventh anniversary, An Garda Síochána is again appealing to the public for any information that may help locate Jón or provide clarity on his disappearance,” gardaí said.

“Even the smallest piece of information — no matter how insignificant it may seem — could assist the investigation.”

A particular appeal was made to anyone in the Whitehall, Santry or Collins Avenue areas on the morning of February 9, 2019, or who may have spoken to or seen Mr Jónsson at that time.

Gardaí are continuing to liaise with his family, who have “endured immense distress and uncertainty over the past seven years”.

“We remain dedicated to finding answers for them,” a garda statement added.

“Anyone who has any information on Jón’s disappearance or who can assist in locating him is asked to contact Ballymun Garda Station on 01 666 4400, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”

The case was also the subject of an RTÉ podcast documentary released last year called Where is Jón.
