Gardaí are investigating the disappearance of a substantial sum of money from a school in Cork city.

It is understood that the amount of money involved is a six-figure sum.

The investigation is in its early stages and no arrests have been made in relation to it.

The school involved is a primary school on the southside of the city.

The funds are believed to have disappeared over a lengthy period of time but it only came to the attention of school management in recent months.

Gardaí have confirmed that a report has been made to them in relation to the disappearance of money from the school and an investigation is now in the early stages.

A source said: “I can confirm that something has been reported to us and it is under investigation.

"There is certainly a substantial figure involved over a sustained period of time.”

It is understood that the amount of money originally believed to have disappeared has grown since the matter was initially reported to gardaí.

When contacted for comment, the school involved would not issue a statement in relation to the investigation, saying it is a “sensitive matter”.
