A number of students at one of the country’s largest higher education institutions remain officially unregistered due to ongoing technical issues with a new student record system.
Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) rolled out a new student registration and record system last September, designed to “streamline” student services across all five campuses. First designated as a TU in 2019, it has campuses across Grangegorman, Aungier Street, Bolton Street, Blanchardstown, and Tallaght.
Since the roll-out of the new system, students have faced a series of technical issues, delaying or in some cases preventing them from registering as a student at the college and paying fees.
To receive financial support from student grant authority Susi, a student must be registered with their college and the college must confirm this registration to Susi.
A spokeswoman for TU Dublin said the majority of students had completed registration and paid their fees, although “a small number have yet to do so”.
“To support students experiencing difficulties, TU Dublin has arranged daily sessions for one-to-one assistance.”
TU Dublin declined to reveal the number of students who remain unregistered due to technical issues.
The spokeswoman added: “Regardless of registration status, all students can apply for grants, access module information, view timetables, and obtain accurate exam and academic information.”
Staff also have access to reporting tools, providing an overview of student registration statuses within each class, allowing academic staff to identify students "who have not yet completed registration and follow-up, and to provide support as needed".
In recognition of the potential financial impact on students whose registration status was not confirmed with Susi, TU Dublin also introduced an additional manual process to verify eligibility if they had difficulties registering.
"Affected students have been contacted directly via email and text and offered one-to-one support to help them complete registration."
The spokeswoman added: "Teams across the university continue to work intensively to resolve any technical remaining issues, working closely with the system suppliers and Educampus."
"We sincerely appreciate the patience and cooperation of our staff and students as we work to ensure the new student records system operates smoothly for everyone.”
A spokeswoman for Susi confirmed it was aware of the issues with the TU Dublin registration system.
To date, 5,506 students who indicated they plan to attend a course at TU Dublin have been awarded a maintenance grant for academic year 25/26.
Of these, Susi has a registration decision for 5,185 students. Susi was unable to confirm if the 321 remaining students were pending a decision due to the technical issues.
There can be a number of reasons for a pending registration decision. Some students may not attend their course while others may no longer be eligible for funding.
