Three road deaths in separate collisions as man held in connection with Monaghan crash

Two men and a woman have died in separate road crashes in Limerick, Monaghan, and Tipperary over the past 12 hours.

In Monaghan, gardaí were alerted to a collision involving a HGV and a car on the N2 at Mullaghnee, Annalitten, Castleblayney that occurred at approximately 8am on Thursday.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her body was removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where an autopsy is scheduled to take place in due course.

No other injuries were reported.

Gardaí said a man aged in his 50s has been arrested in connection with the crash. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a station in the Garda North Western Region.

The road is currently closed pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Any road users, who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N2 between Castleblayney and Broomfield between 7.30am and 8.15am are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

Man killed and three teens seriously injured in Limerick 

Meanwhile, in Limerick, a man in his 20s died and four other people were injured following a crash in the early hours of Thursday morning. 

The two-car collision happened on the N21 at Ballymurragh West at around 12.50am.

The driver of one of the cars involved, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick, where an autopsy will take place in due course.

Three teenagers — two female juveniles and an adult male — sustained serious injuries in the crash and were brought to University Hospital Limerick and University Hospital Kerry for treatment.

Another man, aged in his 20s, was also taken to University Hospital Kerry with non-life-threatening injuries.

The road where the crash occurred is currently closed pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí have again issued an appeal for witnesses.

Any road users with camera footage who were travelling on the N21 between Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West between midnight and 1am on Thursday have been requested to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

It comes as a man in his 20s died in a single-car crash in Co Tipperary on Wednesday night. 

The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced deceased at the scene on the N24 at Cordangan Cross near Tipperary town.

Gardaí said they are particularly interested in potential sightings of a 2005-registered grey Toyota Yaris between 9pm and 10pm on Wednesday night.

These three fatalities bring to 183 the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far in 2025.
