Garda arrested in connection with disappearance of 'substantial amount' of drugs from station

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that an arrest was made on Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation.

A serving garda has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of drugs from a Garda station that had earlier been seized.

A "substantial quantity" were removed from a garda station in January of 2024.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that an arrest was made as part of an ongoing investigation, and the garda remains in custody this evening.

In a statement late Wednesday, gardaí said detectives from the eastern region, supported by the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit, Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, and Regional Garda Cyber Crime Bureau carried out a number of searches and arrests in relation to organised crime within the Eastern Region.

It was confirmed that a garda was arrested by the anti-corruption unit, who is currently being detained under organised crime legislation.

Gardaí investigating related alleged offences have arrested a further five people today. None of these are gardaí.

The spokesperson added: “One male in his 30s and a female in her 40s are currently detained at Garda stations in the Midlands.

“A male in his 40s remains in custody at a Garda Station in the east of the country for alleged related corruption offences.

“Two males in their 40s and 50s who were arrested and detained for alleged related drug trafficking have since been released pending files to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“Investigations which are being led by a Senior Investigating Officer from the Eastern Region are continuing at this time.”
