Status Yellow warnings as heavy rain and flooding hit southern counties

Don't put away your umbrellas just yet as Ireland is set for another week of wet, windy weather.

A status yellow rain alert is in place for Cork and Kerry until 2pm today, and drivers are urged to take care as spot flooding and poor visibility are expected.

A further warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford, Wicklow and Tipperary remains in effect until 5pm.

Motorists leaving Cork City this morning should note a flood alert on the main Cork–Dublin road between J12 (N73) near Mitchelstown and J11 near Cahir.

Unsettled conditions in the south will continue through the weekend, with heavy rain and temperatures between 8C and 13C.

According to Met Éireann, Munster can expect a "very wet and overcast morning" with "spells of rain moving north."

The rain will be "heavy and prolonged, with localised flooding possible."

"A mix of clear spells and isolated showers will develop from the south later this afternoon," the forecaster said.

"Southerly breezes will be fresh at times and highest temperatures will reach 12C to 14C."

This evening and tonight, a mix of clear spells and scattered showers will continue.

"Mostly clear and dry weather will develop overnight allowing mist and fog patches to form." Temperatures could drop as low as 7C.

Tomorrow, mist and fog will clear, giving way to sunny spells, though "cloud will develop during the afternoon with a few showers following from the south. Highest temperatures of 9C to 13C."

The rest of the week will bring more cloud and rain, especially on Thursday and Friday, when heavy downpours are expected in southern counties.

The weekend looks similar, though conditions may improve slightly on Sunday, offering brief respite from the rain.
