Teenager dies after suspected stabbing attack at Tusla residential facility in Dublin

A teenage boy has died following a suspected stabbing at an emergency residential premises in Donaghmede, north Dublin, on Wednesday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to the property shortly after 11am, where a seriously injured teenage boy was discovered. 

Despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second male teenager was taken to hospital in Dublin for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. 

A woman also received medical attention at the scene and was later brought to hospital for further treatment.

Gardaí confirmed the incident “is no longer active” and that there is “no ongoing threat to the community.”

In a statement, Tusla — the Child and Family Agency — confirmed that the incident occurred at one of its emergency residential units in north Dublin.

“Tusla can confirm that a serious incident took place at one of our emergency residential units in North Dublin, which provides care on a 24-hour basis to four separated young people seeking international protection,” a spokesperson said.

“The incident involved two young people, during which a fatal injury was sustained. An Garda Síochána are now conducting a full investigation, and we are co-operating fully with their enquiries.

“Our immediate priority is the safety and wellbeing of the other young people and staff at this unit. We are providing additional supports to everyone directly affected and making efforts to contact the families of the young people who were residing there.”

Gardaí said they are not looking for any other person in connection with the incident and are following a definite line of enquiry.

The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau, and both the State Pathologist and the local Coroner’s Office have been notified.

The body of the deceased will be removed for a post-mortem examination, the results of which will help determine the course of the ongoing investigation.

Gardaí said enquiries are continuing and no further information is being released at this time.

Taoiseach 'shocked and saddened' by incident.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, the Taoiseach said he was "shocked and saddened at the loss of life in a Tusla care facility in north Dublin".

"Our thoughts go to the bereaved family and those injured during this incident," Micheál Martin said.

"The wellbeing of the young people in this facility and the staff is now paramount.

"It is important they are offered every possible support at this difficult time as An Garda Síochána conduct a thorough investigation."
