Gardaí are continuing to question a woman in connection with an alleged fatal assault of a man at his home in Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary, late on Saturday night.

The suspect is expected to be held overnight, and questioning is due to restart in the morning.

Officers have been in regular contact with the DPP to determine whether or not there is sufficient evidence to bring charges against the suspect later on Monday.

The woman, aged 24 and from the Czech Republic, was arrested at the scene, on O’Callaghan’s Lane, at around 11pm on Saturday.

A call was made to 999 in relation to the incident, sparking a response from the emergency services and local gardaí.

When they arrived, they found the body of a male, unresponsive, at the scene. Initial reports suggested he had suffered an apparent stab wound.

Paramedics determined the man was dea,d and the scene was preserved overnight, pending the arrival of the State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau on Sunday.

The man, aged in his late 40s, is understood to be from Eastern Europe.

His body was taken on Sunday to Waterford University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The results will determine the course of the garda investigation, but gardaí expect it will confirm a violent cause of death.

Gardai were making efforts on Sunday to identify the man’s family and make contact with them.

The woman arrested at the scene was detained for questioning. Under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, she can be detained for up to 24 months, excluding sleep breaks.

Gardaí continued local enquiries on Sunday and harvested any CCTV or security footage in the area.

A statement released by Garda HQ early on Sunday said: “Gardaí are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a man following a fatal assault in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. “A woman in her 20s has been arrested and is currently detained at a Garda station in Tipperary under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.” It confirmed the body of the deceased remained at the scene, which was being preserved for forensic examination.

The statement said the coroner had been notified and that the Garda Technical Bureau and Office of the State Pathologist had been requested.

It said investigating gardaí were appealing to anyone who may have any information on the incident to come forward.
