Watch: Spaniards anxious as Spain loses power
Travellers were stranded outside train stations in Madrid on Monday (April 28) after a widespread power outage, with passenger Arantxa Perez claiming "We are going to miss the plane and we don’t know where we are going to spend the night."
Spain and Portugal were hit by a widespread power outage that paralyzed public transport, caused large traffic jams and delayed flights.
Stranded traveller Angeles Alvarez said "I don't understand anything. I just don't know who to turn to. My daughter in Barcelona is giving birth. We're going to miss the connection to get there."
The outage caused chaos in parts of Portugal and Spain as traffic lights stopped working, causing gridlock. Transport networks were halted, hospitals were left without power and people were trapped in the metro and in elevators.
