In a statement, gardaí said they are currently at the scene 'of an explosion that occurred at a residence in Tallaght'.

The Special Detective Unit is understood to be assisting garda investigations after a man appears to have accidentally blown himself up with a pipe bomb.

The man, aged in his 50s, suffered serious injuries and had to undergo surgery but his wounds are not thought to be life-threatening.

The incident, revealed in the Irish Examiner, happened on Wednesday morning in Killinarden, Tallaght, south-west Dublin.

Initial inquiries do not indicate links to dissident republicans or any other extremist group, nor are there signs of significant criminal associations.

But gardaí in Tallaght are set to conduct a detailed examination, including identifying possible associates of the man and any links that might be found online or in communications.

Technical examinations are being conducted on the remaining components of the pipe bomb.

Ballistic experts will test if the device bears similarities to any previous devices seized. DNA and forensic tests will also be conducted.

The Special Detective Unit is the main operational unit of the Garda Crime and Security Intelligence Service and conducts, or assists in, investigations that might have links to terrorism or national security issues.

Incidents involving improvised explosive devices typically involve them in the local garda investigation.
